Argentina won the World Cup on penalties, defeating France
Argentina won the 2022 World Cup on penalties against France on Sunday at Lusail Stadium.
After a thrilling game, the South American won the shootout 4-2 in overtime.
It was a showdown between the 35-year-old Messi and his France counterpart Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick – the first in a World Cup final since 1966 – but still lost.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Argentina from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute after Ousmane Dembélé was penalized for a dangerous tackle on ngel Di Mara.
Argentina’s lead was extended to 2-0 after 13 minutes by Di Mara’s brilliant goal, which they maintained until halftime.
Kylian Mbappe equalized for France in the 81st minute, then scored a screamer a minute later to force extra time.
In the 108th minute, Messi restored Argentina’s lead. Mbappe equalized for France ten minutes later from the penalty spot, forcing the match to be decided on penalties.
Argentina, on the other hand, won 4-2 on penalties.
